Hello.

I have attached the maps and they have been colored according to the Clery definitions below.

What I would like to do is apply these layers to our main interactive map. My thought is to have a Clery Safety Geography box on the bar that houses the locations. When opened, they can apply the layers according to the three Clery campuses (Boone, Leon Levine and Hickory).

ORANGE LAYOVER - On-campus Property—The buildings and land the university owns or controls are used for educational purposes, including residence halls.

On-Campus Residential – Student housing located on campus.

We will need to add the icon that is already populated on the interactive map to the Clery box and call them the On-campus Residential Halls.

GREEN LAYOVER - Noncampus Property – University-controlled buildings used by students that are not within the main campus boundary (e.g., leased housing or athletic fields).

PURPLE LAYOVER Public Property – Public sidewalks, roads, trails, and parking lots that directly border campus property and are publicly owned.

RED - Do not include for clery

Hi Edward,

I'm working with Rachel to help improve our Clery map for the university. After chatting with Derek a little on what we were looking to improve, he suggested I reach out to you for some guidance. I'm hoping that you might have some bandwidth to provide us with a little expertise! It would be excellent to find a solution where the public could find and view different layers representing different Clery geography. Here's some more info on what we're looking for to create an interactive Clery map for App State:

Clery geography includes four types of locations that need to be clearly marked on the map:

On-Campus Property—The buildings and land the university owns or controls are used for educational purposes, including residence halls.

On-Campus Residential – Student housing located on campus.

Non-Campus Property – University-controlled buildings used by students that are not within the main campus boundary (e.g., leased housing or athletic fields).

Public Property – Public sidewalks, roads, trails, and parking lots that directly border campus property and are publicly owned.

We also need to map each campus, and App State has three separate campuses under Clery Safety, each with its own Clery geography:

Boone Main Campus – Primary academic and residential campus.

Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences (LLHHS) – Now treated as a separate Clery campus because it’s not connected to Boone and has its own academic programs and administrative operations.

Hickory Campus – A standalone academic site.

Rachel provided an Excel file that we can use. I've attached it to this email. Derek and I also looked around a little to see what other campuses are doing, and here is an example from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Is this something that we can create using the resources App State already has access to for GIS mapping? What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this?

Thank you again for your willingness to support the development of the Clery interactive map. Below, I've outlined the Clery Act compliance structure, including the campuses and geography types that need to be reflected in the map.

Clery-Defined Campuses at Appalachian State University

The following locations are designated as separate Clery-reportable campuses in accordance with federal guidance:

Boone Main Campus

The university’s primary academic and residential campus, located in Boone, NC. This includes the core academic buildings, residence halls, student life facilities, and administrative offices in a contiguous geographic area. (within 1 mile)

Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences (Leon Levine)

A separate academic site located apart from the Boone Main Campus. Leon Levine is treated as a separate Clery campus due to its distinct location, dedicated academic programming, and administrative operations.

Hickory Campus

A standalone academic site located in Hickory, NC. This location has separate facilities, operations, and programming that qualify it as a separate Clery campus.

Clery Geography Types

Each Clery-reportable campus must be broken down into the following federally required geography categories. All locations in the Excel file are organized by:

Clery Campus (Boone, Leon Levine, Hickory)

Clery Geography Type (as defined below)

Property Description and Address

Usage by Students and Other Classification Notes

1. On-Campus Property

University-owned or controlled buildings and land that fall within the main campus boundary

Used for educational, administrative, residential, or student life purposes

2. On-Campus Residential Facilities (Subset of On-Campus)

Residence halls or other student housing located on campus

These are labeled in the Excel and should be visually distinguished in the map

Can be symbolized with a unique icon or color variation

3. Non-Campus Property

University-controlled buildings that are not within the contiguous campus boundary

Used for student activities (e.g., leased housing, athletic fields, travel programs)

4. Public Property

City- or state-owned roads, sidewalks, trails, or parks that directly border university-controlled properties

These are marked in the spreadsheet and must be clearly delineated on the map

Coloring / Symbolization

Each Clery Geography Type should be visually distinct:

On-Campus Property – solid fill (e.g., light blue)

On-Campus Residential – different shade or icon overlay (e.g., house symbol)

Non-Campus Property – dashed border or unique color (e.g., orange)

Public Property – line features (e.g., roads/sidewalks in gray or patterned lines)

Each Clery Campus (Boone, Leon Levine, Hickory) can be grouped or outlined with a unique base color or label to show separation.

Labeling

label buildings or properties where space allows, especially for:

On-Campus Residential buildings

Non-Campus locations (leased housing, fields)

Public Property segments (e.g., road names, trails)

Legend

Include a map legend that defines:

Clery Geography Types and their symbols/colors

Campus boundaries and/or names

Any icons used for housing, trails, etc.

Have a layer toggle or filter that allows users to show/hide by campus or geography type?
