Description: This shapefile provides a polygon boundary for the Cuyahoga River AOC in Ohio. In general, the following steps were taken in developing the shapefile: 1. The previous AOC shapefile was obtained from EPA. 2. HUC 12 data from NHD Plus V2.1 were downloaded for the full extent of the AOC. 3. A narrative of the AOC was obtained from the State contact and/or taken from the AOC webpage (see narrative below). 4. The AOC shoreline (river and lake as applicable) of the previous shapefile was updated using the data from Step #2. 5. The extent of the AOC was determined from the narrative in Step #3 and/or the extent from the previous boundary and applied. 6. Utilizing aerial imagery (current and historic) and best professional judgement, manual edits to the shoreline were made if significant deviations were apparent due to man-made changes or possible errors. Narrative: Amy Klei, OEPA, 10/31/2014. “The Cuyahoga AOC boundaries, established in 1988, originally included the lower 45 miles of the river from the Ohio Edison Gorge Dam at River Mile 45.1 in Cuyahoga Falls to the mouth of Lake Erie as well as approximately 10 miles of Lake Erie shoreline, from Edgewater Park on the west side of Cleveland to Wildwood Park on the east. The Cuyahoga River AOC includes drainage from Big Creek, West Creek, Mill Creek, Tinkers Creek, Sagamore Creek, Chippewa Creek, Brandywine Creek, Furnace Run, Yellow Creek, Sand Run, Mud Brook, Euclid Creek, Doan Brook, and Dugway-Ninemile-Green Creeks. These watersheds are within Cuyahoga, Lake, Medina and Summit counties. The AOC includes the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which preserves 22 miles of river between the primary urban/industrial centers of Akron and Cleveland. On July 21, 2010 the upper AOC boundary was extended to River Mile 46.5 which encompasses the Gorge Dam pool and it's sediments.” Note: According to updated river mile markers (https://cuyahogariverwatertrail.org/interactive-map/), the Gorge Dam is located at approximately River Mile 44.5 and the Gorge Dam pool extends to approximately River Mile 45.9. Representatives of both EPA and OEPA reviewed and approved the boundary.
