GED2014_V1_00 is the definitive set of 2014 general electoral district boundaries as defined by the Representation Commission as at 17 April2014. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Statistics New Zealand are the custodians.
These districts comprise the general electoral districts as constituted under the Electoral Act 1993.
General electorate boundaries are defined at meshblock level.
The number of general electoral districts, and electoral populations for each electorate, is controlled by the criteria in the Electoral Act 1993. Within these criteria, when setting the boundaries, the Representation Commission considers community of interest, facilities of communication, topographical features, and any projected variation in the general electoral population of those districts during their existence. The Representation Commission is convened by the Surveyor-General every five years, following a population census and Māori Electoral Option. Its role is to re-draw electoral boundaries to follow prescribed population quotas.
General Electoral District is a flat classification with 65 categories (64 electorates and one residual).
General electoral district boundaries are defined at meshblock level.
