Description:

Public Access Areas

Public Access Areas indicate where the public has a right of access across Aotearoa New Zealand. We derive this dataset from Toitū Te Whenua | Land Information NZ (LINZ) data and incorporate third-party information from local councils and the Department of Conservation (DOC).

Road Parcels – Formed and unformed legal road.
Easements - Registered easements that provide for public access.
Reserve Land - Reserve land that provides for public access under Reserves Act 1977 and its previous iterations.
Public Access Conservation Land – Publicly accessible conservation land under relevant legislation. The land is mostly managed by DOC but there are exceptions.
Other Parks & Reserves - Public access over land owned by councils with councils’ permission.
Other Public Access Areas - Other identified legal public access.
