Description: This National Tracks and Trails Dataset is developed by the Outdoor Access Commission (Herenga ā Nuku) as per the Key Dataset Improvement for Resilience and Climate Change 25/26 programme by LINZ. We derive this dataset from both territorial authority and third-party data sources.
Tracks are critical infrastructure during emergency response, providing essential alternative access routes when primary transport networks fail — including during evacuations and Search and Rescue operations. Natural linear features such as tracks are used by Search and Rescue to identify probable travel corridors when locating missing persons. Accurate, up-to-date track data enables emergency services and civil defence agencies to assess viable access options and supports effective emergency planning and response.
