Description:

This layer shows recent earthquakes from GNS Shaking Layers and uses matching symbology and classes as the GeoNet maps for the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. It can be used in addition to the GNS Shaking Layers epicentre layer.

This layer is updated when

a Shaking Layers event is created
a new latest run is available for an event

Use this MMI layer if you want to know the ground shaking across an area as the result of an earthquake.

The specific layers provided in this service are:

Shake Intensity: The macroseismic intensity in the New Zealand Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale (Dowrick et al., 2008) for available events.

Shaking Layers are computed using the most appropriate (source) parameters for the calculation, and these may differ from those visible on the GeoNet website or other products.
