Description: Analysis of shoreline change for the South Shore of Rhode Island was conducted using the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) v.4.0-4.2 for ArcMap® (THIELER et al, 2005) and the historical shoreline positions from 1939, 1951/52, 1963, 2012 and 2014. DSAS-generated transects were cast at various distances, 50/100 meters along a shore-parallel baseline. The intersections of transects with the historical shoreline positions are identified by intercept points. The rate of shoreline change was determined by measuring the differences in the distance to each historical shoreline position from the baseline along each transect. End point rates of change were determined for the years 1939-2014, by dividing the time between sequential measurements of historical shoreline position.
Purpose: This dataset consists of orthogonal transects and shoreline change rates for Washington County Rhode Island (excluding Block Island). Rate calculations were computed within a GIS using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.3, an ArcGIS extension developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Long-term rates of shoreline change were calculated using the net shoreline movement (NSM) or shoreline change envelope (SCE) depending on the available shoreline data. A reference baseline was used as the originating point for the orthogonal transects cast by the DSAS software. The transects intersect each shoreline establishing measurement points, which are then used to calculate long-term rates.
