Service Description: This week, we will map some historical data in the form of 1910 US census records for the city of Houghton. This is done through a process called geocoding – assigning spatial coordinates to a piece of information based on some spatial clues in the information (Such as addresses, map coordinates, or place names). Geocoding is a simple process in principle, but, as you will find, it requires plenty of data preparation and some careful thinking in order to overcome some of the limitations or errors in the original data.
