Description: This feature class contains the power-generating stations that were operational, in rehabilitation, or had idle capacity in Africa in 2018. Data for each facility were obtained from Cross-border Information (London) Ltd. and their African Energy Live Data platform (https://www.africa-energy.com/live-data). Power stations were categorized by the USGS into “Capacity Range” groups according to their installed capacity (in megawatts, if known) and “Fuel Categories” based on the type of fuel(s) consumed in the generation of electricity. Fuel categories include Renewable (solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal), Non-Renewable (diesel, fuel oils including crude and heavy fuel oil, and natural gas), Hybrid (a combination of renewable and non-renewable fuel types), and Other/Unknown for those where facility data is insufficient for categorization. In this feature class, the attribute field names have been modified from their original source to fit our GIS attributes table schema; descriptive field aliases were created from the original field names in the source data.*Note: There are several entries in the source database that lack geographical coordinate locations (Latitude and Longitude) but contain other data that are of value for this geodatabase (e.g. qualitative location, installed capacity, controlling authority, equity holders), which may be used to assess the energy capacity of different countries in the study area. As such, we have included those data in this geodatabase.
Copyright Text: This GIS feature class was compiled by Abraham J. Padilla (USGS). All Africa power station data were obtained from Cross-border Information (London) Ltd. (CbI) and their African Energy Live Data platform and are used and reproduced in this dataset with the expressed consent of CbI.
Description: This feature class contains the location of 2,408 fuel and non-fuel mineral production and processing operations in 1,866 locations across Africa compiled from a variety of sources by the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The dataset provides some generalized information about each mineral operation, such as name of the operation or facility, mineral commodity(ies) produced or processed, status (as of 2018), capacity, operator/ownership, and location descriptions. Non-GIS data were derived from Table 2 of individual country chapters published in the USGS 2018 Minerals Yearbook, Vol. III (Area Reports: International) publication. All data were reorganized and restructured from their original format to fit our GIS attributes table format, updated for accuracy when additional information was available, and georeferenced for this geodatabase using various sources that included company documents (annual reports, press releases, etc.), scientific/geologic reports, industry reports, government reports, maps, digital mapping services, and minerals- and mining-specific databases, as noted for each record. The data are intended to highlight the state of the minerals industries in Africa as of 2018.Note: for attribute field "DsgAttr07 (Annual Production Capacity)" null values (production capacity data not available) are represented by the value "-999"; for attribute field "DsgAttr09 (Capacity Notes)" "c" denotes capacity is a combination of more than one facility, "e" denotes capacity is estimated, and "g" denotes capacity is in gross weight of the commodity.

Description: This feature class contains the capitals and/or administrative centers for all African nations and dependencies in accordance with the U.S. Department of State’s Independent States in the World fact sheet (https://www.state.gov/independent-states-in-the-world/), as well as cities with a population greater than 1,000,000 in 2018 as estimated by the United Nations (UN) Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division. Population data for all included cities were acquired from the UN Data Query portal (https://population.un.org/wup/DataQuery/). The coordinates for each city were obtained from the Natural Earth Populated Places Database, v. 4.1.0 (https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-cultural-vectors/10m-populated-places/), or the Google Earth Map Database (2020). All other attributes for each city were compiled from the U.S. Department of State, Natural Earth, and the GADM database, v. 3.6 (www.gadm.org). In this feature class, the attribute field names have been modified from their original source to fit our GIS attributes table schema; descriptive field aliases were created from the original field names in the source data.
