Description: This release, version II, of the Intertwine Alliance's OakQuest data incorporates both the compilation of Version I (2016) data sources with the edits and extended extent of Version II, thanks to the efforts from Kingfisher Ecological Services (KES), Metro and funding from several OPWG partners. Version I of the OakQuest data was developed from field observations and inspection of high-resolution aerial photography in GIS, as well as other records checked and compiled from existing regional tree inventories in 2014 which included available street, heritage, and other regional tree inventories. During July-Oct 2014 and August-November 2015, community volunteers and natural resource professionals collected field observations of oak and other tree species using a custom smart phone app. Data collected in the field were later spatially adjusted and error-checked within ArcGIS, and additional oak trees visible in high-resolution aerial photography were digitized. Data were converted to a common projected coordinate system and observations were coded by source and category of origin.Version II, our team of digitizers, took a more systematic approach. Taking on discreet areas, some of which we already had inventoried oaks and others which we have yet to explore. This enabled us to not only be confidence in both the presence and absence of data but also enabled us to begin to understand our status in this effort and plan for what we have left to do. The goal is to have the nearly 3,000 sq mile bi-state regional conservation strategy extent covered. As of July 2017, we have 1,033 square miles covered, (version I - 131 sq.mi). We have 743 sq/mi planned to inventory by summer 2018, and have identified approximately 328 sq.mi where it is presumed non oak habitat. This still leaves us with the 901 sq.mi in Washington state which we will continue to explore ways to fund and bring into future versions.
