Description: This layer helps visualize the 2018 OakQuest Release. The points are centroids of 2.5 acre grids which cover the entire Regional Conservation Strategy. Here we symbolize them based on the percent of Oak Polygons within each grid. The polygons were generated by buffering each oak observation with a 30 foot buffer. This number was chosen to approximate an Oak Canopy.
In the collection effort points were placed where oak canopy was observed. Occasionally many points represent a mature Oak and at other times only one point represents a mature oak. We realize this buffer will over estimate oak canopy in some areas and you may visualize roads, homes, water underneath these areas, and in other areas this canopy will underestimate the crown of the oak.
Though we feel confident at the landscape level where we anticipate this layer being used, the viewer will get an accurate feel for the patterns of identified oaks on our landscape.
We have additional layers to help the viewer perceive and understand the oak patterns at the neighborhood and local scales. Site level planning will need on the ground knowledge of what is actually present on the site.
