The map layer covers all of Northumberland, including the Northumberland National Park, North Northumberland Coast AONB and that part of the North Pennines AONB in the county, and is made up of over 15,500 polygons. Each polygon is linked to a record within the project database which holds detailed information on features such as boundary characteristics, field size, geomorphology, pattern, and change since the mid-19th century. A final report describes the project in detail, including methodology, overviews broad landscape types, description of individual historic landscape character types and historic character areas, discussion of time depth and change and links to regional research agendas.See https://doi.org/10.5284/1030284for full report.
The project ran from 2005 to 2008 with the objective to characterise and understand the human activities that have shaped the current landscape of Northumberland.
