Total_population_risk_in_pollution_WFL1 (FeatureServer)

View In:   Map Viewer

Service Description: I created a map to visualize the total population at risk of pollution in the six New York counties of Nassau, Queens, Kings, New York, Richmond, and Bronx. To create this map, I first performed a union of the buffer zones for traffic pollution and toxic release inventory (TRI) pollution. Next, I used the dissolve tool to merge the overlapping buffer zones, creating a single layer that shows the combined area of high pollution risk. This allowed me to identify the areas where traffic pollution and TRI pollution overlap, creating a higher risk of exposure to toxic pollutants. Finally, I used the zonal statistics tool to calculate the total population at risk of pollution within each dissolved buffer zone. By overlaying the population data with the dissolved buffer layer, I was able to create a single map that shows the total population at risk of pollution in each area.

Description:

Published: August 2022

A vector polygon GIS file of all county boundaries in New York State. The file was originally a compilation of U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale digital vector files and NYS Department of Transportation 1:24,000-scale and 1:75,000-scale digital vector files. Boundaries were revised to 1:24,000-scale positional accuracy and selectively updated based on court decisions. Currently, boundary changes are made as needed based on authoritative sources.
