This is a point layer FENAME of topographic names from the FEN table used as a way of storing names of hydrographic features away from the parcel tables. It is also used for locality names. Most points are simple locality names not linked to parcels. Useful to identify parcels with appellation that are normally water bodies, or for simple searches to locate a town. It was used to move some attributes off the DCDB parcels when converting to LandOnline so that the names were not lost. The names were supplemented with the NZ gazetteer database in 2000 when LandOnline was converted from the DCDB. It is now maintained , so to get the latest names you do not need to download the latest gazette list. However note that the gazette database has been discontinued (2009) as well. You will have to use the topographic annotation layer now. LINZ have advised in July 2009 that they will now start maintaining this layer. Feature names are placed on the first coordinate in the shape field. Recently I noticed that some shapes were polygons for lakes, not points, so the location of the label for cadastral labels is at the edge of a few lakes, not on a centroid. Topographic labels are at the lower left of the label from the topographic scans. A lot of non-names have been retained for cadastral water features such as 'hydro' or 'seabed' that need to be dropped if the layer is used for labelling maps. Note: Although the fename dataset is now maintained by LINZ, decisions made by the Geographic Board may not be corrected in this layer.
