Description: Wildfire can have significant adverse effects on streams, lakes, and drainage basins used by municipalities to provide drinking water. Damage to vegetation and soil erosion after a fire event can severely impact water quality for many years after the initial event. Built-up debris and ash can alter the taste or smell of water, damage existing infrastructure, and the use of fire retardant can increase chemical levels. Changes to the local hydrologic cycle such as the timing of snowmelt and runoff can also impact the availability of water.
All of these potential impacts can negatively impact the cost of maintenance, safety, and availability of drinking water. Water source intakes and infrastructure are most vulnerable to fires upstream that alter the existing environment. This layer identifies sub-watersheds (HUC-12) in Montana in which at least one municipal water source intake is present, and thus may be at elevated risk of adverse impact to communities due to wildfire.
