Service Description: These data were created as part of the DisMAP project to enable visualization and analysis of changes in fish and invertebrate distributions. This survey points layer provides information on both the locations where species are caught in several NOAA Fisheries surveys and the amount (i.e., biomass weight catch per unit effort, standardized to kg/ha) of each species that was caught at each location. Information on species distributions is of paramount importance for understanding and preparing for climate-change impacts, and plays a key role in climate-ready fisheries management.

Description:

NOAA Fisheries and its partners conduct fisheries-independent surveys in 8 regions in the US (Northeast, Southeast, Gulf of Mexico, West Coast, Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Hawai'i Islands). These surveys are designed to collect information on the seasonal distribution, relative abundance, and biodiversity of fish and invertebrate species found in U.S. waters. Over 900 species of fish and invertebrates have been identified in these surveys.
