Description: The primary objective of these building damage assessments is to communicate rapid high-level building damage trends on a regional scale. Land damage assessments indicated on this viewer are based on the visual interpretation of either oblique aerial imagery obtained from the New Zealand Defence Force, or vehicle survey. These assessments have been undertaken on a regional scale (generally exceeding 100 km2) and may not accurately reflect local variation in damage. Information on these maps is subject to change and will be updated as further reconnaissance information becomes available. Photographic information is not sufficient to determine the structural condition of damaged buildings and the structural adequacy of buildings requires assessment by other means. These maps provide only one tool to better understand relative levels of damage. Resourcing decisions based on this information alone is not recommended.
