Description: The Prairie Species Recovery Area applies to four sub-species of Mazama Pocket Gopher (MPG). Recovery Areas and Units were developed by U.S. Fish and Wildlife and are based on best professional judgment, and on such features as the natural pattern of suitable pocket gopher soils, pocket gopher occupancy patterns, genetics, land use features, MPG habitat connectivity, and permeable or impermeable barriers to movement. They were largely delineated using biologically- and/or management-relevant features such as rivers, creeks, wetlands, MPG soils, ridges and other landscape-scale breaks in topography (sometimes pertaining to hydrologic unit code boundaries (e.g., sub-watershed or sub-basin boundaries)), and administrative and man-made features, such as County line boundaries, highways, streets, or roads. More information about the recovery area and the best available science utilized can be found in the MPG Recovery Plan:
