<procdesc>The following maps were saved as images and georeferenced:http://www.theodora.com/pipelines/africa_oil_gas_and_products_pipelines_map.htmlhttp://www.theodora.com/pipelines/asia_oil_gas_and_products_pipelines.htmlhttp://www.theodora.com/pipelines/australia_new_zealand_and_papua_new_guinea_oil_gas_products_pipelines_map.htmlhttp://www.theodora.com/pipelines/central_america_caribbean_and_south_america_oil_gas_and_products_pipelines.htmlhttp://www.theodora.com/pipelines/europe_oil_gas_and_products_pipelines.htmlhttp://www.theodora.com/pipelines/north_america_oil_gas_and_products_pipelines.htmlUsing ArcMap 9.3, Oil pipelines were digitized from the georeferenced maps, taking care to snap the pipelines to the proper cities.Georeferencing base:ESRI data and maps 2008 - country.sdc and cities.sdc and ArcGIS Online Service world_street_map.lyrThe source maps have no coordinate system listed; lat/long lines are rectilinear, so geographic projection was chosen for geo-referencing. The geo-referencing results weren't great, but good enough for a small scale capture. Then digitizing the .mxd was set up with the ESRI world cities layer, and the ESRI online service World_street_map.lyr for basemap reference. When adding pipelines, pipeline features were snapped to an ESRI world city (if it existed), or visually placed the end on the city as drawn on the World_street_map.lyr layer. If the endpoint city was not labeled on World_street_map, then they were located in Google Maps, the coordinates were located in ArcMap, and a point was added. The pipeline endpoints were put in the cities of pipeline origin and destination as labeled on the source maps. Some stylization in between cities was necessary - i.e. not exactly following the line from the source map because the geo-referencing was off, but capturing the general trend.</procdesc>
