Given that a full characterization of benthic community structure in well-defined habitats may be a potentially important long term goal of the Long Island Sound mapping program, a small grab sampling study was designed to determine the number of samples needed to estimate the occurrence of rare species within a habitat (i.e., bottom type). Based on prior studies in the Peconic Bays ecosystem and bays on the North Shore of Long Island (Cerrato et al., 2007; Cerrato at al., 2008), it was anticipated that 10 or more samples would be required to collect approximately 70% of the benthic species present in a bottom type.
