The purpose of using ITS technologies is to transmit real-time information to improve traffic safety, relieve traffic congestion, improve transportation efficiency, reduce air pollution, increase energy efficiency, and promote transportation productivity and network operations. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) presently manages a number of ITS technologies across the state that help drivers and IDOT staff make informed decisions about travel times, roadway conditions, when to salt roadways and more. IDOT anticipates that ITS technology will continue to be an important aspect of Illinois’ transportation system and is working to proactively plan for future implementation of these technologies. &lt;/span&gt;</idAbs>
