Description: This data comes from the Historical Housing Unit and Urbanization Database 2010, or HHUUD10. It contains housing unit count estimates in every 2010 census tract in the Continental United States for each decade from 1940 to 2010, plus for 2019. The feature layer also includes an urbanization year indicating if and when each tract became "urbanized," and it provides absolute and percentage changes in the number of housing units by decade, from 1940 to 2019, from 1940 to 1980, and from 1980 to 2019. There are also fields with information on the non-residential urban land uses by tract. More information on each field is listed below.
To read more on the methodologies used to estimate the housing unit counts or to produce the urbanization years, please refer to the methods paper.
Please also remember that these data are estimates and are therefore
imperfect. They should be treated like all interpolated data: with
caution and a healthy dose of skepticism.
Attributes:
OBJECTID: Unique identifier for each feature.
STATE: State abbreviation.
COUNTY: County name.
GISJOIN10: Unique tract ID in NHGIS format.
GEOID10: Unique tract ID in Census Bureau format.
Housing Unit Change, YYYY - YYYY: Absolute housing unit change between the two years in the name.
% Housing Unit Change, YYYY - YYYY: Percentage housing unit change between the two years in the name.
Housing Units YYYY: The estimated number of housing units according to HHUUD10. Housing unit estimates from 1940 to 1980 were estimated using the methods outlined in the paper, while housing units from 1990 to 2019 come directly from the NHGIS.
Residential Sq. Mi. 2019: The estimated area in square miles of potential residential areas (i.e., surface area minus golf courses, airports, water surfaces, cemeteries, and rail yards).
% Developed YYYY: The percentage of a tract's land area that was covered by an urban land use according to the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) of the year in the field name.
Urbanization Year: The estimated year each tract became "urbanized." A tract was considered "urbanized" when it surpassed 200 housing units per square mile in its residential area, had a land-use that was over 50 percent "developed" according to the % Developed field, or was surrounded by other urbanized tracts. For more on how this field was calculated, see the methods paper. Tracts with an urbanization year of "2035" should be considered non-urban.
