            <abstract>**NOTE:  This data set is an extract of depth points within Lee County, Florida. The following narrative describes the data for the entire study area.**  This coverage contains 58,195 bathymetry data points that pertain to the West Coast Inland Navigation Distract bounded by Bishop Harbor in the North and the Lee/Collier County Boundary line in the South. The depths are reported to the nearest 1/2-foot and are adjusted to mean lower low water. The depth for each data point is contained in the ArcInfo polygon attribute table (PAT) in the item: Depth_5. For South Sarasota County, the depth points were digitized from a Department of the Army, Army Corps of Engineers (Jacksonville District, Jacksonville, Florida) reconnaissance survey (D.O. File No. 41-35,123), dated December 1987, and extending from Fort Myers Beach to Tarpon Springs, Florida.</abstract>
                                    
      
            
            <purpose>This spatial data set provides one information base that is necessary to meet the waterway management needs of waterfront neighborhoods in the West Coast Inland Navigation District. The primary objective of the project is to design and implement a management system for southwest Florida waterways that is consistent with municipal, county, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), and West Coast Inland Navigation District (WCIND) goals of facilitating safe boating and reducing boating impacts on natural resources. The design criteria are: (a) fit channel maintenance to boat draft needs; (b) minimize impacts on bay habitats; (c) prioritize and evaluate management alternatives on a regional scale; and (d) identify information products, for boaters and shore residents, that encourage environmental awareness by users of neighborhood waterways and boat access channels. The database was developed to meet the goals of the projects: "Regional Waterway Management System for Sarasota County, Florida", "Regional Waterway Management System for North Manatee County", "Regional Waterway Management System for Lee County, Phase 2", and "Regional Waterway Management System for Lee County, Phase 3".

                <procdesc>For South Sarasota County, Florida Sea Grant personnel digitized intracoastal waterway sounding positions and depths from 1:24,000-scale paper maps obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers. A 10,000-foot State Plane grid (Transverse Mercator projection for the west zone of Florida) printed on the paper maps was used to register and digitize the depths from the paper document utilizing a GTCO Digi-pad 5, large-format digitizer pad. The digitized points were referenced to shoreline information contained in 1:24,000 digital line graphs obtained from the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Project personnel familiar with the waters in the study area verified the orientation and positions relative to the shoreline. For South Sarasota County, North Manatee County, Lee County Phase 2, and Lee County Phase 3 the original source document soundings (MLW) were adjusted to mean lower low water (MLLW). The historical difference between MLLW and MLW, as published for National Ocean Service (NOS) tidal benchmarks located in the study area were used to adjust the depth soundings to MLLW. An examination of the NOS tidal benchmarks indicated that stations located within the confines of the study area, provided appropriate tidal datum differences. The stations used in North Manatee County were 872-6273, 872-6238, and 872-6277, in Lee County Phase 2 the stations used were 872 5667, 872 5541, 872 5488, 872 5441, and 872 5391. South Sarasota County used five benchmarks and Lee County; Phase 3 used eight benchmarks. This method was reviewed and approved by personnel of the University of Florida Department of Coastal Engineering. The soundings were recorded to the nearest 1/2-foot. 
On the date of original publication for South Sarasota County (199806) USGS 1:24,000 digital line graphs were used as the GIS basemap and all depth features were adjusted to conform with the shoreline as represented in the DLG. In 2000, the GIS basemap was replaced with USGS 1-meter DOQQs and depth features were readjusted to conform to the DOQQs. Depths were overlaid on the DOQQs and, when necessary, feature positions were adjusted in ArcInfo GIS using the field annotated 1:2400 section aerials as a guide.

The database was developed to meet the goals of the projects: &amp;quot;Regional Waterway Management System for Sarasota County, Florida&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;Regional Waterway Management System for North Manatee County&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;Regional Waterway Management System for Lee County, Phase 2&amp;quot;, and &amp;quot;Regional Waterway Management System for Lee County, Phase 3&amp;quot;.&lt;/div&gt;**NOTE:  This data set is an extract of depth points within Lee County, Florida. The following narrative describes the data for the entire study area.**  This coverage contains 58,195 bathymetry data points that pertain to the West Coast Inland Navigation Distract bounded by Bishop Harbor in the North and the Lee/Collier County Boundary line in the South. The depths are reported to the nearest 1/2-foot and are adjusted to mean lower low water. The depth for each data point is contained in the ArcInfo polygon attribute table (PAT) in the item: Depth_5. For South Sarasota County, the depth points were digitized from a Department of the Army, Army Corps of Engineers (Jacksonville District, Jacksonville, Florida) reconnaissance survey (D.O.
