The boundary was based on the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area administrative boundary and incorporates edits by Melanie Beck in December 2017 and as of April 3, 2018. Additional edits to align boundary with tracts (around ULVCOSP) and more closely to parcels where it departs tracts and NRA boundary. These edits were completed by Denise Kamradt on April 23, 2018. The boundary is divided into four sections for mapping purposes. A box was added for a cartographic mask. The remainder of this metadata describes the SMMNRA boundary. Edited by Denise Kamradt on 10/9/18 to add private parcels between developed area in Pacific Palisades cut-out and Topanga State Park. Parcel numbers 4431023028 and 4431022003 were added based on 2016 LA County parcel data. Edited 11/6/19 to match Study Area versions from 10/11/18.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>This is an interim boundary which registers to tracts as of 8/5/2014. Created using dissolve on NRA item in tracts and edited to remove internal sliver polygons and errors related to the incomplete tracts shapefile (currently being developed from assessor parcels). Edited on 5/5/2015 and 5/8/15 to remove erroneous hole in NRA polygon. No official changes have occurred since 2002. All following metadata is copied from NRA_2002: This GIS layer contains the legislated boundary of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) as of the 2002 boundary expansion. Land within this boundary is NOT all public park land and about 40% of the land within the SMMNRA is privately owned. The data were produced by dissolving the boundaries of the SMMNRA tract ownership map so that only the outer boundaries of the polygons within the SMMNRA boundary remain.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

The NRA boundary spatial data set is based on the tracts data and includes all area, except remainder acreage (or NRA = N). Revised boundaries were generated as tracts were revised (usually to improve registration and correct errors). Boundary was expanded and revised in 2002. A major tracts edit (regeneration from 2010 assessor parcels and review of all tract attributes) resulted in a revised boundary, though no substantive changes were made. Boundary should be revisited at some point (perhaps during next boundary change) to align with current park land (and original intent) within the NRA.
Original NPS property maps were drafted by hand from 1978-1983 on enlarged USGS 1:24,000 topographic maps. Maps were drafted at six different scales depending on size of parcels. Regular updates were drafted on original maps. In 1990, the hand-drafted map sheets (60) were digitized by contractor in GRASS GIS. Individual digitized sheets were geo-referenced and edge-matched into one single data layer. Accuracy of final product is impossible to estimate. Both accuracy of original maps and distortions created during the digitizing and edge-matching process are serious sources of possible error. At a minimum, the map is no better than NMAS for 1:24000 scale maps (+/- 12.2meters) and is likely much worse.

In 1992, Data were converted to Arc/Info format. In 1995, data was edited to register better with Los Angeles County Assessor map in CAD format. State accuracy of parcel map was +/- one foot. A very rough estimate of the resulting accuracy of unincorporated Los Angeles County areas (i.e. those tracts covered by the parcel map) is +/- 30 meters. Los Angeles and Ventura portions fo the map were not significantly changed.

In January 2004, the data were edited to better register with a Ventura County Parcel database from 1999. Data attributes and geography are updated periodically to the best of NPS' ability. After NPS property maps are updated or modified, a new boundary is generated by dissolving the boundaries of the tract ownership map so that only the outer boundaries of the polygons within the SMMNRA boundary remain.

Tracts shapefile, current to 8/5/2014 (and regenerated from 2010 Los Angeles and Ventura County parcel data), was copied. Minor edits were made to correct some discrepancies in NRA attribute (Tracts: 157-27A, 157-16B, 157-31F, 126-06A, 101-28A, FID = 2779) and to divide some tracts into NRA/non-NRA portions based on 2002 boundary file (157-02, 101-76) where the differences were very obvious. Smaller, more complicated edits were left to deal with when completing the tracts shapefile. The shapefile (with definition query NRA = Y) was then dissolved on NRA attribute allowing multi-part polygons to result in only one polygon. There were a few holes in the resulting polygon which were filled by editing (delete part and complete sketch). These gaps in the tracts shapefile within the NRA will need to be fixed in tracts.
