The following steps were performed by Esri: Downloaded the compressed file from the National Atlas of the United States and extracted it. Projected the data to WGS 1984. Removed unneeded fields. Renamed source field FEATURE2 to STATUS and calculated its value “-999” to blank. Changed the codes and names of three counties: 1) Bedford (independent) city, Virginia (51-515) - Changed to town status and added to Bedford County (51-019). 2) Kusilvak Census Area, Alaska (02-158) - Changed name and code from Wade Hampton Census Area (02-270). 3) Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota (46-102) - Changed name and code from Shannon County (46-113). Converted the dataset into a file geodatabase.

The dataset is converted to file geodatabase (FGDB) format using tools in ArcGIS. The geometry is checked, and if needed repaired.
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:1,000,000-scale data. The horizontal positional accuracy is unknown.
