This dataset was created from United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) high-resolution 1:24,000 data extracted in September 2012. The NHD product was split into regional data layers for regional assessment staff to assign established assessment unit IDs based on predetermined up- and downstream extents. Some erroneous waters were removed and a few waters were corrected for spatial accuracy using Virginia Base Mapping Program orthophotography flown in 2013 thru 2015. Assessment determinations noted in this dataset are based on guidance from Virginia's 2018 Water Quality Assessment Guidance Memo 18-2001 available at https://www.deq.virginia.gov/Portals/0/DEQ/Water/WaterQualityAssessments/2018_WQA_Guidance.docx. This geodataset has two supplemental GIS data files: the 2018 regionally significant VPDES facilities shapefile (va_18ir_vpdes_facilities.shp) and the 2018 monitoring stations shapefile (va_18ir_wqm_stations.shp).

All arcs and polygons are used to define surface hydrologic features in the state or that VA DEQ is responsible for monitoring and assessment.
At the close of each assessment cycle the dataset is submitted to US EPA for approval whereby it is considered Virginia's completed geospatial data product.
Attributes assigned to each water segment are based on attributes associated with the ID305B (assessment unit ID) entered in the statewide water quality assessment database. QA/QC checks are performed on the database prior to linking attributes to the GIS data, however errors may still occur. Please direct any questions about attribute accuracy to the Data Distributor. The geospatial product is maintained and updated by VA DEQ each assessment cycle (biennially) using the most current NHD product where revisions were made to Virginia waters, the most recent aerial photography provided by the Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN), and by freehand digitizing where necessary.
