This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset.

The Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines is one of six datasets that form the Base Watersheds - Simplified Hydrography package, which is part of the Base Watersheds data. The six datasets within the Base Watersheds - Simplified Hydrography include three feature classes: Simplified Linear Network Lines, Simplified Linear Network Points and Simplified Hydropolygons and three tables: Simplified Linear Network Lines Cross Reference, Simplified Hydropolygons Cross Reference and Strahler Order Coding. All of the feature classes have been generated in Ten Degrees Transverse Mercator projection (500 000 metre false easting) North American Datum 1983. The feature classes are linked to the tables through four relationship classes: Simplified Linear Network Lines 1 to Many Single Line Network Cross Reference, Simplified Hydropolygons 1 to Many Hydropolygons Cross Reference, Simplified Linear Network Lines 1 to 1 Strahler Order Coding and Simplified Hydropolygons 1 to 1 Strahler Order Coding. The tables are linked to the feature classes using the BFD_ID field. Detailed descriptions are provided within the individual metadata records for each feature class or table.

The simplified streams and lakes were created by removing secondary flows (braids, cross-connecting flows and backflows) from the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines and all non-perennial (recurring lakes and wetlands) features from the Base Waterbody Polygons. Man-made features such as canals and ditches were removed unless they were necessary for connection (many were natural features that had been modified). The resulting simplified hydrography allows for the construction of a simple connected network and simple waterbodies. The software utilized in the hydrologic correction of the Alberta Provincial DEM does not accept complex flows and it recognizes recurring lakes surrounding perennial lakes as being a lake surrounding an island. Strahler Order coding could not be easily accomplished and the construction of routes would not be possible with the presence of complex flows.

The Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines is a simplification of the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines. The source, sink and confluence points are captured as the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Points. The simplification of the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines involves removing or manipulating all features that do not form simple connections. Due to the simplification process that is applied to the source data, the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines contains fewer streams than the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines and no streams have been split on characteristics other than confluences with other streams or lake shorelines. Unsplitting does not remove the linework but connected unbranched streams will be represented as only one line. The Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines contain no artificially bisected streams, braided or cross-connecting secondary flows or circular flows, which are often associated with drainage ditches. For complex flows where the flow splits, the secondary flows are deleted. The simplification process removes ~10% of the lines present in the source data.

The attribution on the lines includes system-generated fields for area and perimeter as well as a global unique identifier. There is also a name, subbasin, simplified feature type and a user-created unique identifier (BFD_ID), which provides linkage to the Cross Reference and Strahler Order Coding tables. In addition, there is a field that captures the BFD_ID of the downstream connected stream line and a field that identifies the stream as terminal (1) or not (0). A relationship class has been built to link the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines to the associated Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines Cross Reference table (Simplified Linear Network Lines 1 to Many Single Line Network Cross Reference). A relationship class has also been built to link the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines to the associated Base Watersheds - Strahler Order Coding table (Simplified Linear Network Lines 1 to 1 Strahler Order Coding).

<supplinf>The Base Features Derived Watershed Delineation and Hydrocoding Specifications documents have been used to generate the Base Watersheds datasets. Not all of the datasets listed in the specifications have been created. The data were originally processed in ArcInfo format by subbasin (based on the Drainage Basins of Alberta 2006) for all of the individual datasets. The original datasets have been converted into feature classes and merged. Edge cleanup and reconciliation to the provincial boundary have been performed where appropriate.</supplinf>
<purpose>The Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines are intended to provide a base to generate Strahler Order coding for the primary streams in the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines as well as a number of other processes. The directionality of the streams is preserved when the BFD SLN is created but all complex features in the source data are removed or manipulated to facilitate the assignment of Strahler Order codes. This simplification is also required for the hydrologic correction of the Alberta Provincial Digital Elevation Model, the delineation of reaches, the construction of routes and the delineation of watersheds.</purpose>

<attraccr>No report exists but a few anomalies and issues were noted. There were a number of corrections made where subbasins merged. The downstream and terminal fields were corrected if errors were found but more issues may be present in those fields. The terminal stream points were cross-checked against the terminal stream lines and any errors were corrected. There are currently more terminal stream lines than terminal stream points as some stream lines share a point. The simplified feature type was corrected if errors were noted but very few issues were noted.

The stream lines were checked against the source data. If the downstream line was missing, the nearest downstream line BFD_ID was assigned to the DOWNSTREAM field.</attraccr>

<horizpar>The source data for the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines is the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines. The Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines is a mosaic of several datasets and consists mainly of Provincial Digital Base Mapping (PDBM) project data and National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) data. The data accuracy will depend upon the source of the hydrography. The PDBM data is considered to represent a 1:20 000 scale of mapping with a spatial accuracy of +/- 5 metres. The PDBM data has been supplemented with data from the 1:50 000 Access Update Mapping, which has a spatial accuracy of +/- 20 metres. There is also data from Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI) incorporated into this dataset. AVI is based on 1:15 000 scale with a spatial accuracy is +/- 5 metres.

The majority of the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines data is 1:20 000 PDBM data with an accuracy of +/- 20 metres or better. There is a significant amount of federal NTDB data used in the national parks and the northeastern portion of the province. This data has an accuracy of approximately +/- 100 metres.

<logic>The Base Watersheds - Simplified Hydrography is based on the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines and the Base Waterbody Polygons, which have been simplified by removing complex, man-made and non-perennial features. The source data was partitioned by Drainage Basins of Alberta 2006 subbasin prior to processing as there were size restrictions associated with the hydrologic correction software. The subbasins were processed by several different contractors over a period of several years. There are inconsistencies between individual subbasins as a result of differences in processing by different contractors as well as differences in the source data. Portions of the source data represent 1:50 000 scale and portions are 1:20 000 scale.

Icefields may feed more than one outlet for more than one subbasin. Only one outlet was chosen as the major flow. For some subbasins, braided channels were not handled well and connection for significant portions of the stream network were lost. These were not corrected.

The topology of the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines was checked for overlaps, intersections, self overlaps, self intersections and single parts and cleaned up. There are no topological rules relating the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines to the Base Watersheds - Simplified Hydropolygons or Points.

Stream lines that terminated in lakes were removed when noted but more may exist. There are some primary/primary splits where one flow line should have been designated as primary and the other as secondary. A number of flipped flows were also noted. The flow errors were not corrected.

</logic>
<complete>The dataset is complete for the provincial extent. A few missing connecting streams and lake paths through lakes with outflow were noted but additions were not made to the data. There are four additional arcs in the simplified streams as well as flow direction changes in the streams that belong to the Taltson River subbasin.

The connectivity around the Milk River Ridge Reservoir is not good. Dry areas with ditches and canals are problematic. Connections across subbasins have been occasionally broken as noted in the Bow River and Red Deer River subbasins. There are missing arbitrary flow lines from source glaciers for the Oldman River, Bow River, Red Deer River and North Saskatchewan River subbasins.</complete>

A relationship class has also been built to link the Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines to the associated Base Watersheds - Strahler Order Coding table (Simplified Linear Network Lines 1 to 1 Strahler Order Coding).</idAbs><idPurp>The Base Watersheds - Simplified Linear Network Lines are intended to provide a base to generate Strahler Order coding for the primary streams in the Base Stream and Flow Representation Lines as well as a number of other processes. The directionality of the streams is preserved when the BFD SLN is created but all complex features in the source data are removed or manipulated to facilitate the assignment of Strahler Order codes. This simplification is also required for the hydrologic correction of the Alberta Provincial Digital Elevation Model, the delineation of reaches, the construction of routes and the delineation of watersheds.</idPurp><searchKeys><keyword>geoscientificInformation</keyword><keyword>inlandWaters</keyword><keyword>elevation</keyword><keyword>elevation</keyword><keyword>hydrology</keyword><keyword>watersheds</keyword><keyword>routes</keyword><keyword>reaches</keyword><keyword>Strahler Order</keyword><keyword>hydrocoding</keyword><keyword>Alberta</keyword></searchKeys></dataIdInfo>
